Moving with Children? Tips to Help Them Adjust

SelectStorage February 29, 2016 Comments Off on Moving with Children? Tips to Help Them Adjust 257

Moving is scary for many children, especially when they find out that they will be leaving everything they know behind. From starting a new school to living in a new home, it is not always exciting for children as it may be for you. It is important that you work with your children to help them adjust and to make the moving process easier. Below, we will go over some tips to help you help your children adjust to the upcoming move.

  1. Always Let Your Child Tell You How He or She Feels

It is important that you allow your child to express his or her feelings about the upcoming move. If you do not let them tell you how they feel, they may begin to feel alone and hide their true feelings. This is not the step in the right direction and can lead to them resenting the new move even more.

Take some time to sit down with your child and let them know that they can come to you and let you know how they feel. Your child will feel much better if you are there to comfort them and listen to them.

  1. Make Packing a Game

You can help your child prepare for the move by creating a game that he or she will enjoy. For example, you can have a packing competition to see who can pack a single box the quickest.  Of course, you want to make the day fun, so make sure to include a sweet reward for the winner.

  1. Explore Your New Community

Before the actual move, take a trip with your child to the new community and show him or her around. You can go to the local park, have a bite out to eat, and even take a tour of their new school. This will give your child the opportunity to see what their new neighborhood and community will look like before being thrown into it.

  1. Have a Going Away Party

Consider throwing a “see you later” party before you move. This way, your child can hang out with all of his or her friends before the big day. Instead of calling it a goodbye party, call it something fun like a new journey party or catch you soon party.

  1. Keep in Touch with Old Friends

If your old community is not too far away, you should consider visiting once a month or so. Your child will enjoy seeing his or her old friends and it will make the entire move easier on them. If you are moving too far away to travel back on a regular basis, have your child exchange phone numbers with his or her friends, so they can always keep in touch.

Moving can be difficult for little ones, but you can help make the big day less scary and intimidating by following the tips above and helping your child adjust.
