If you are closing in on moving day, but you still have food left in your home, you may not know what to do with it. Below, we will go over some tips to help you learn and decide what to do with your extra food.
- Make a Meal Plan
As your move day approaches, take an inventory of the items that you have and then begin making meals around the items you have on hand. For instance, if you have some frozen vegetables, chicken stock, and heavy cream, then you could purchase some chicken and pastry dough and make a chicken pot pie.
You want to try to eliminate as much of the additional food that you have on hand, especially if the food will expire or is dependent on being cold or frozen.
- Donate Extras
If you know that you are not going to use some of the food you have on hand, consider donating it to friends, family, or those in need. Homeless shelters and food banks can always use the additional food to feed those who are in need.
- Take Some with You
If you have seasonings and canned foods that are not about to expire, then you can take them with you. Simply place them in a box and put them on the moving truck. You should make sure that each bottle is sealed, so that none of the items spill out while being transported.
- Consider Take Out
In the final days leading up to your move, consider ordering take out. You will find that you are able to eat up what you order and you will not have to worry about having too many leftovers or additional ingredients on hand.
- Non-Perishables
If you need or want to have some food on hand, then consider purchasing non-perishables to keep with you, as they can go along for the trip. Some of the best non-perishables include chips, peanuts, pretzels, and similar items.
Moving food is one of the hardest things to do, especially if the food you have on hand needs to be refrigerated or frozen. The best thing you can do is use up the food you have and then donate or give away the rest.
Keep in mind that you can take some frozen and cold items with you if you are only moving right down the road. Take some time to think over the food items you have and then make a plan.
