A Quick Checklist for Your Upcoming Apartment Move

SelectStorage December 23, 2015 Comments Off on A Quick Checklist for Your Upcoming Apartment Move 237

Before you move out of your apartment, there are some steps you need to take to make sure the entire move goes smoothly. If you skip any of these steps, you will find that you may not receive your deposit back or you may find many obstacles in the way. Below, we will go over some things to add to your checklist.

  1. Let Your Landlord Know

Read over your lease as you sometimes need to give your landlord a written notice 60 or 90 days before you move out. In addition, if it is not the end of your lease and you plan on moving, you may owe two months of rent before you are free and clear to end the lease.

When you do let your landlord know, write him or her a letter and follow up with a phone call to make sure he or she received it.

  1. Start Switching Your Utilities

You need to start calling your utility companies and having the service switched, turned off, or turned on. Be prepared to pay deposits in case you need to. Typically, you can call into the utility departments to find out how much you will need to pay to have the service turned on, which will allow you to budget properly.

In addition, you may be required to pay your current bill before you can turn new service on somewhere else.

  1. Submit a Change of Address

Do not forget to submit your change of address to the post office. One of the best things about submitting the request is that you can choose when you want the change to take effect. For example, if you are not moving for two weeks, you can set the date out for two weeks from today to ensure your mail goes when you go.

  1. Pack and Book the Movers

Now it is time to start packing up your apartment and booking the movers and truck. You should start packing about a month in advance and book your movers and truck no later than two weeks in advance.

If you are preparing to move out of your apartment, you need to take the right steps to ensure that you do everything properly. You do not want to be rushed during your move and you want the day to go as smoothly as planned, so make sure you prepare early
