Moving day should more or less be called hectic day because, after all, it is full of chaos. No matter how long you plan or how diligently you plan for your move, there may be a hiccup or two along the way. Some of these hiccups could have been prevented and some of them just happen even with careful planning. Below, we will go over some of the most common moving day mishaps and how you can avoid them.
Mishap 1: Horrible Weather
This is one of those mishaps that you cannot avoid and unfortunately, weather can take a turn for the worse at any time. Whether it is extreme heat, hail, sleet, or snow, you need to handle your move with care. One of the best recommendations is that you push your move off until the weather has cleared up. Of course, if it is a slight rain and you are comfortable driving in it, go for it, but if you feel that you will not be safe, do not endanger yourself or your family.
Mishap 2: Too Small of a Moving Truck
Remember when you had to estimate the size truck you needed for your move? Well, it happens to all of us. You underestimate because the truck looks big enough and then come to find out – it is not. This happens more than you think and there are a couple of ways to handle this situation.
First, if you have not started to pack the truck and you have extra time, call the truck rental company and see if you can swap the truck out for a larger size. This is possible to do, but do not let it inconvenience you either.
The second option is the best way to handle the situation and that is to overestimate the size of the truck you need when you are renting. For example, if you think you need a 17-foot truck, go with the 20-foot truck instead. Those three feet make a huge difference and the price between the two sizes is usually minimal.
Mishap 3: Not Enough Packing Supplies
Oh-no! You are down to the last few things you have in your home and you are out of boxes, packing tape, and cushioning. What do you do? Do not panic even though you may want to. This happens often and you are in luck because many of the truck rental companies and even home improvement stores around you sell the supplies you need. You can run out and pick up the amount you need at the last minute to save yourself.
In the future, you can avoid this problem by purchasing more supplies than you think you will need and simply return the remainder or give it to a friend who is planning their move.
The above three mishaps can be overcome and you should avoid panicking at all costs. Simply take a deep breath and go with the flow. The less stressed you are, the smoother your move will be.
