In part one of this two article series, we talked about some of the different steps you need to take to pack and store your items properly. In this next part, we will finish going over the steps you need to take to ensure your items are protected while you have them in storage.
Step 1: Start Packing Up Your Items
Now it is time for you to start packing up your items and putting them into their respective boxes. The easiest way to do this is to go through your items and place like items with like items. What this means is that you should place all linens together, clothes together, baby items together, and so on. If you keep like items together, it will be easier to find what you need when you need them.
Once all of your items are divided up, you can start wrapping the breakables and placing them in the boxes. If you do not need to wrap your items, simply place them in the box and then fill the box with shredded paper for cushioning or even packing peanuts.
You want to avoid packing the boxes too full as this will make them heavy and you may find that the bottom gives and all of your items fall to the floor.
Step 2: Put the Packed Boxes into Your Vehicle
When you place the packed boxes into your vehicle, make sure that you place them securely within the car, otherwise, they may topple around too much. If you will be using a moving truck to take your items to the storage unit, you need to pack the moving truck properly. To pack the truck properly, you should put the larger items such as your furniture and appliances in the back of the truck and place all of the boxes near the front.
Step 3: Place the Boxes and Containers into Your Storage Unit
Now it is time to place your boxes and containers into your storage unit. To do this, you will want to make sure that you place the heaviest boxes and containers on the floor and move from heavy to light when stacking your items.
You should make it appoint to ensure that the boxes and containers stack easily and without any leaning because an unsteady box can cause other boxes to topple over with it and this can mean broken dishware and valuables.
Next, if you think that you will need to access an item later on, you should place the box with that item closer to the front of the unit. This way, you will be able to grab the item when you are ready to use it.
If you are packing your items to place into your storage unit, you always want to place an inventory list on the outside of the box. This list will help guide you when it comes to determining what is in the box. Remember, if you want your items to remain in good condition, you must pack and store them properly.
