One of the hardest areas of your home to pack is the kitchen. You may be wondering why this is, but think about it for a moment. Your kitchen contains your food, dishes, silverware, décor, and much more. You will soon start to realize that your kitchen has more items in it than most, if not all, of your other rooms.
When it comes time to pack up the kitchen, you will not be able to get away with just throwing all of the items into boxes, as most of these items will break. Below, we will go over some tips to help you pack up your kitchen before your move.
1. Go through Everything
Yep, that is right – you need to go through everything. At this point, you should throw away items that you are no longer using. If you feel you need to keep these items, consider renting a storage unit so that you can free up space in your new home.
2. Toss Extra Food
If you have mountains of food items nearing expiration or just sitting around, it is time to toss them. A couple of weeks before your move, inventory what you have, and then do not replenish what you run out of. This will help cut back on food waste. It is almost impossible for you to take all of your food with you, but you can take things such as spices, canned goods, and paper items.
3. Wrap Your China and Glasses
Start pulling out your china, glasses, and dinnerware. Set aside enough table settings for you and your family and then begin wrapping each piece individually for the remaining items. You should wrap each item with newspaper and then wrap again in bubble wrap.
When it comes to placing your items in a box, choose pre-sectioned boxes that allow you to safely pack your items.
4. Pots and Pans
Start wrapping up your pots and pans and carefully place them into a box that you designate for them. Always wrap the pot and the lid separately to avoid scratches, chips, and breaks.
5. Silverware
When it comes to your silverware, either place it in a silverware chest or wrap it in plastic wrap and hold it together with newspaper. Both the case and plastic wrap will protect your silverware from becoming tarnished or rusting during the move.
6. Small Appliances
Moving your small appliances may seem like a challenge and you will need to do some prepping when it comes to them. It is wise to remove any sharp blades from items such as food processors, blenders, and more. You should protect all blades on sharp knives with a protective sleeve. Wrap all cords of your small appliances and secure them with a zip tie. Once that is done, wrap the appliances carefully with newspaper and place in a box.
Prepping your kitchen and packing it up for your move will take longer than a day or two. You should make sure to wrap each item carefully and secure them to prevent breakage.
