5 Things to Avoid When Hiring a Moving Company

SelectStorage October 15, 2016 Comments Off on 5 Things to Avoid When Hiring a Moving Company 378

If you want a moving company to help you make your upcoming move, there are some things that you need to sit down and think about. There are quite a few things you want to avoid when you do hire a moving company because it can hurt you in the long run.

For example, if you hire the wrong company to handle your move, you may find out that you have damaged items or that there were a bunch of hidden fees that you did not know about.

Below, we will talk about the things that you should avoid when it comes to hiring a moving company.

  1. Hiring a Company Without a Physical Address

You want to make sure that you hire a moving company that DOES have a physical address. Sometimes, when a moving company does not provide an address, it means that the company is a brokerage and that they may contract their services out. This can affect you negatively, especially if the company does not own their trucks or any of the equipment that they have.

  1. Getting a Full Quote Over the Phone

If you talk to a moving company and they offer to provide you with a FULL quote over the phone, it is not a good idea. A moving company needs to see the items that you need moved to provide you with the best quote.

If you do receive a quote without the company viewing your items, then you will likely wind up paying a bunch of surprise and hidden fees that you did not expect.

  1. Purchasing an Additional Insurance Policy

You do not need to purchase an additional insurance policy to cover your items during the move. The company that you hire should have an insurance policy in place and your homeowner’s insurance may cover any damage to your property as well.

  1. Hiring the Cheapest Mover

Hiring the cheapest mover is not a good move and one that should be avoided at all costs. A moving company that offers too low of a rate usually does not have a good rating, is too new in the industry, or is trying to scam you.

Before you settle on a mover, make sure to get a handful of quotes and then compare the quotes to see what the average price is.

  1. Pay a Deposit to the Mover

You should never have to pay a deposit for your move. In fact, a reputable mover will not ask you to pay any deposits for the truck or the actual move. Since you typically pay for the move either before or after the conclusion of it, there is no reason to have to pay additional deposit fees for your move.

When it comes down to it, you want to make sure that you hire a mover that is actually going to handle your items with care and provide you with the service that you need and desire. If you notice that the company wants deposits, is not truthful with you, or has an odd way of practicing business, run.
