If you have a disorganized office desk and drawer, don’t be surprised when you are not as productive as you want to be. In fact, it has been proven that those with unorganized desks and drawers are less motivated than those who remain organized. So, while you may want to slack off at work, it is not a good idea and this article will help you organize your office desk in just a few minutes.
Clean the Drawers
The first thing you need to do is go through your drawers and clean them out. Yeah, that old packet of ketchup from three summers ago needs to go – NOW. It is important that you eliminate clutter from your desk drawers, as this is what leads to frustration when you are attempting to find something in your desk.
If you absolutely need cream containers or sugar packets in your desk, purchase a small box or something to keep them inside and then place that box inside of your drawer.
Get the Paperwork Out
Have you ever shoved papers into your desk drawer? Of course you have. We all have. Now it is time to remove all of those papers and sort through them. Make a pile for keep, shred, and in progress. You should get a folder sorter for the top of your desk and keep all incoming and outgoing paperwork and files in it. This will allow you to remain organized at all times.
Label, Label, Label
You cannot label enough. Those files and paperwork you just went through? Yep, label them and place them in your filing cabinet. You should setup a system where you will be able to easily identify where files and paperwork go.
For example, you could file alphabetically, or by date, or by type of project it is. Choose something that works for you and something that will stick for you as well.
Clean the Top of Your Desk Off
Ah-Ha! We caught you. You should clean off of the top of your desk to prevent clutter. If the top of your workspace is dirty and unorganized, why would you want to work on top of it? Simply throw any trash in the trash can, organize your files, and then keep your workspace clean.
While it sounds easy to organize your office desk, it is not always as simple as it may seem. If you are short on storage in your office, you will find that it is difficult to organize anything. Try to utilize vertical and horizontal wall space to provide you with additional room.
If you need even more room, consider keeping files in a self-storage unit. If you do not need to access these files often, but you need to keep them on hand, a storage unit is the perfect solution and you will be able to enter the unit as needed.
Remember, clear the clutter and you will be more inclined to be productive and get work done throughout the day.
