Your child’s room is probably disaster central and if you are not even sure where to begin, you are not alone. Many parents find that their child’s room is a mess and they simply accept it and make them keep the door closed when guests come over. But, you do not have to sit idly by and there are some great ways to organize your little monster’s room. Below, we will go over some of these ways and are sure they will help you out.
- Look at the Room from a Child’s View
One of the first things you need to do is take a look at your child’s room from their view. Remember, your child is not as tall as you and they do not see the same things you see. Take a seat on the floor and evaluate the room and the space that is there. You will notice that from their view, they see a whole different world than you. For example, while you see what is on the bookshelf, they see what is in the bookshelf.
While you are down there, also think about items that may be a hazard for them as well. While you may not think to climb onto the bookshelf, they may, and you should anchor the shelf to the wall to prevent any accidents.
- Include Your Child
You should include your child in the organization process of his or her room. This will teach your child some great skills and it allows them to recognize the mess that they actually made. In addition, your child will tell you where he or she wants items to go. If you simply do it all, then your child will not learn about cleanliness and they are unlikely to find their toys when they want them the most, thus leading to a bigger mess.
- Sort and Toss
The next step in the process is to sort through the toys your child has and toss them out. The best way to do this is to let your child direct you. If your child wants to get rid of a toy – let them. Same goes for if they want to keep one. If you force them to toss toys they do not want to, you will be teaching bad behavior and they will view cleaning up as a negative act. Of course, you can encourage them to toss certain toys away, but never simply take the toy and throw it away.
- Organize and Put Away
Now that you sorted and tossed the toys, start to put them away and place them on the shelves. Let your child direct you and let them tell you where they want their toys to go.
If you are trying to organize your child’s room, make sure to include them and listen to what they have to say as well. The entire process can be enjoyable and does not have to be a negative task.
