If you are preparing for a move, you already have enough stress on your plate and you do not want to have to worry about confusing terms or words that do not make much sense to you. As you work with a moving company, you may hear phrases or words you do not know. Below, we will go over some of the most common moving terms to help you be better prepared and not be confused when they are said.
Binding Estimate – A binding estimate is usually the estimate that a mover will provide you with and this estimate is based on the items that you have to have moved. For instance, the estimate will include items that you tell them you need to move. If those items change, the estimate will change as well.
COI – COI stands for certificate of insurance and is proof that the company you are working with has insurance in case an accident occurs or in case something is damaged during the move. You do want to make sure your moving company has the proper amount of insurance.
Valuation – A valuation is a monetary amount that is placed on your items when they are moved or shipped. This valuation is used in determining how much coverage is needed and how much you, as the customer, pays for coverage of these items.
PBO/PBC – This means that items you have in your home were packed by you. For example, PBC is Packed By Customer and PBO is Packed By Owner. This allows the company to know that the items were not packed by the company, so if damage occurs to those items due to improper packing, it is not the company’s fault.
Full Value Protection – This is a term that describes the amount of protection that you purchase for your items and how much liability the company has to fix or replace any items that may become broken or damaged in the moving process.
Non-Binding Estimate – A non-binding estimate is based on the amount of your move and does not change. This means that regardless of the amount you were quoted, this is the amount that is to be paid to the company. The amount may be more or less depending on what happened during the move and if you asked for additional services or not.
Access – Access is a term used to discuss where the movers will enter your home and residence. It also talks about where the movers will park their vehicle and how they will move the items. This is important because your movers need to map out the property and where they plan to go to minimize a delay in time and maximize efficiency.
If you do not understand a moving term that your moving company says, ask them to clarify it for you. You do not want to be confused on move day and it helps to know what each term means. Don’t be shy, but if you are, simply look up the terms online.
