If renting a storage unit is in your future, you may be wondering what size unit you need and how you can get to that number. Not everyone knows how to choose a storage unit for their needs and it can be confusing when you are presented with all of the sizes.
No matter what it is you need to store, there is a storage unit that is right for your needs, but how exactly do you know what size to rent?
- Assess What You Need to Store
Some people need to store their entire three-bedroom home and others only need to store a garage worth of items. What you need to store will determine how large or small of a unit you need. When you think about the items you plan to store, also think about any of your future needs. Will you eventually need to place a couch or two in storage? Or do you only need the unit for boxes of antiques?
- Are You Storing Long or Short Term?
While the size does matter, it is more about how long you plan to store your items for. If you are going to store an entire house, but you only need to store the items for two months and then you plan to come back and empty the unit, you do not necessarily need a bunch of room to move around or walk in your unit.
If you plan to store items for a year or more and you need to access them at some point in time, you want to rent a larger unit, so that you have room to move around and go through the things you need to.
- Look for a Size Guide
The storage facility you talk to will have a size guide handy and they will be able to help you determine the size of the unit you need. If you cannot head down to your local storage facility, check online to see if they have an interactive storage size estimator for you to try out.
These estimators will allow you to input items and move them around. Once you have your items inside, you can then determine the size unit you need.
- Estimate Based on Truck Size
You can estimate the size of your needed storage unit by the size of the moving truck you need. For example, if you use a 15-foot truck, then the recommended storage unit size is 10-foot by 10-foot. For a 25-foot moving truck, the recommended storage unit size is 10-foot by 20-foot.
If you are unsure of what size storage unit to rent, go over the items you plan to store and then evaluate based on your needs. If you are ever in doubt, you should always go a bit bigger to make sure that you have enough space and do not have to move in and then move out into another unit later on.
