Storage Tips for the Back-to-School College Student

If you are getting ready to head back to college after a break, it is important that you plan wisely as your dorm room is not going to hold a lot of items. In fact, did you know the average dorm room is only about 200 square feet? That is not a lot of room, especially when you have to share it with someone else.

Below, we will go over some storage tips to help you get the most out of the room that you have to work with.

  1. Get Rid of What You Don’t Need

For starters, you should start to scale down what you do not need. For example, do you really need to keep all of those empty beer cans as souvenirs? It is unlikely that you do, so toss them out.

You should only keep the things that you need to have with you. Any additional items will only cause clutter and frustration.

  1. Utilize Your Walls

When you are in your dorm, take a picture of the space you have to work with and then decide how you want to use your wall. Shelving is a great option and will allow you to take more items with you.

In addition, you can choose to get a couple of small cubby like shelving units to place on the wall. These will provide you with the additional space you need to store some of your knickknacks.

  1. Stay Organized

While it may seem difficult to do, you need to stay as organized as you possibly can. For example, you should keep your school books and supplies in one place, your bathroom items in another, and so on.

  1. Store Things under Your Bed

If you have space under your bed, make use of it. There are different organizational totes that you can purchase that allow you to store coats, clothes, and other items under your bed.

When it comes to storing items in your dorm room, remember that you are limited on space and you should only take what you need. If you find that you still have too many items, consider renting a local storage unit to keep your items safe while you are on campus.

On a final note, don’t be afraid to experiment with different organizational and storage options within your dorm room. You never know what will be functional and look great too.
