One fear you may have about renting a storage unit is that your unit becomes infested with pests including roaches, ants, or mice. You are not the only one who worries about this and there are ways that you can avoid any type of pest infestation in your unit. Below, we will go over some tips to help you ensure that bugs and rodents stay far away from your storage unit.
- Avoid Cardboard When You Can
Mice like to chew through cardboard, especially when they think there is an item inside that they may enjoy. To prevent this from happening, you should pack your items in plastic totes or storage containers as mice are unable to chew through this type of material.
- Check Your Boxes and Totes Before Transporting
If you are moving a bunch of items from your garage into your storage unit, take some time to go through the items and boxes to ensure that you do not already have pests in the box. One of the most common reasons pests invade storage units is because they come along already in the boxes you bring.
- Spray Your Unit
Find out if you are allowed to spray the interior of your unit with a pesticide. Some storage facilities may allow you to do so, but others may not. You do not want to spray without asking first in case the units have already been sprayed or in case of allergies, etc. If you are given permission to spray the unit, make sure that you go around the unit and spray along the bottom border and also around the opening at the door.
- Keep Food Out of Your Unit
You should never store food items in your storage unit as this will definitely lead to pests within your unit. Whether the food is opened or closed, it will attract pests, so simply avoid doing it. If you do happen to find a food item mixed in with your storage items, quickly remove it and investigate the box to ensure no pests are in there.
- Wrap Your Furniture
When you can, wrap all of your furniture including your couches, chairs, and mattresses. Pests can quickly hide within the cushions and fabric of the furniture and then breed and lay eggs. If you wrap the furniture, this prevents them from doing so and you won’t have to worry about new visitors when you bring the furniture home.
If you plan to place your items in a storage unit, you need to be vigilant about pests and rodents as they can commonly occur. If you follow the steps above and avoid storing items that attract pests, you will find that you do not have a problem with any invasions. If you are concerned about pests, make sure you choose a facility that frequently sprays the premises and has active pest control.
