How to Prevent Mold or Mildew in Your Storage Unit

SelectStorage January 28, 2016 Comments Off on How to Prevent Mold or Mildew in Your Storage Unit 326

Mold and mildew can grow not only on your items, but also in your storage unit. It is important that you protect your unit and your items at the same time to ensure you do not have to replace them once you are ready to get them out of storage.

Below, we will go over some tips and tricks to help keep mildew and mold far away from your unit.

  1. Keep Appliance Doors Open

You can prevent mold and mildew inside of your appliances by keeping the doors to them propped open. While it may take up a bit of space in your storage unit, you will find that your appliances do not take on a musty smell and they are clear from any trapped moisture, which will lead to mold and mildew.

  1. Use a Climate-Controlled Unit

If you are worried about mold and mildew forming in your storage unit, make sure that you choose a climate-controlled unit. These units are air conditioned and the units are kept within a specific humidity range, which does not allow mold or mildew to form easily.

  1. Use Moisture Reducing Products

There are products that you can use that suck up the moisture in your storage unit. These products are placed on the floor or up on a shelf and will collect any additional moisture that arises in your storage unit. You will need to check the products periodically and replace them once they are full of water.

  1. Avoid Cardboard for Storage Unit

If you can avoid cardboard boxes, you should. When there is moisture in the air, the cardboard sucks it up and this can mean that your products are exposed to the moisture. Depending on the products you have in the cardboard boxes, you may find mold and mildew in there as well.

Preventing mold and mildew in your storage unit is easy if you know what steps to take. If you find that you do have mold, make sure that you eliminate it and then find out the cause for it. Once you know what the cause is, you are able to eliminate it and enjoy a self-storage unit free from mildew and mold.
