How to Safely Store Batteries in a Self Storage Unit

SelectStorage October 3, 2015 Comments Off on How to Safely Store Batteries in a Self Storage Unit 267

Keeping lots of extra batteries on hand is often a necessity. From the smallest clock, to the biggest machinery, every single equipment needs batteries to run on. However, finding storage space for extra batteries can become a challenge.

When battery storage needs exceed, many people look towards self storage to solve their problems. Storing batteries in a self storage unit is common nowadays; however, adequate precaution and safety measures need to be taken to make sure that the batteries are still operable when you retrieve them weeks or months later.

For all types of batteries that you tuck away in storage, keep in mind the following care instructions.

1. Store batteries and equipment separately

Don’t you recall leaving batteries in your toys, only to discover weeks later that they don’t work anymore? Batteries have a better chance of lasting longer when they are taken out and stored separately. Hence, when you place battery operated equipment and machinery in self storage, make sure you have checked the battery compartment.

2. Don’t leave batteries scattered in the storage box

The best way to store batteries is to leave their original packing on. Within the plastic and cardboard wrap, the batteries stay buffered and protected. However, if you are storing open batteries, it is best to tie them up neatly, not leave them scattered. Also, make sure you do not leave a metal object in the same compartment to avoid power leakage.

3. Rent a climate controlled unit

Batteries go bad if they are exposed to extreme heat. This means that for storage batteries to last longer, they should be placed in temperature controlled units so that even if the outside temperature rises, within the unit, humidity and heat is stabilized.

4. Separate the old and new

Storing old and new batteries together is not a good idea. Battery leakage usually results from mixing old and new ones, which is why it is advised that you keep them labeled and separated. Moreover, if you store old car batteries with new ones, or any other items, the leakage can cause a lot of undue damage.

5. Follow the rules for rechargeable batteries

When you have rechargeable batteries to look after, you have to consider the level of charge left in the batteries before it is put in storage. If the battery is 100% charged it will be wasted; however, if it is 0% charged, it can leak. Experts suggest that a charging level of 40% is advisable because rechargeable batteries slowly discharge when kept away for long.
