Before you start packing up for your move, it helps to go through all of your items to ensure that you are not taking along any items that you do not need or will not use. If you are having a hard time just tossing out some of your items, consider having a moving sale. Not only will you make money, you will know that your items are heading off to a new home to be enjoyed and not simply to the local landfill. Below, we will go over some tips to help you have a successful and profitable moving sale.
- ALWAYS Clean Your Items
One of the worst things you could do is set out items for sale that are dirty and dusty. No one is going to buy the item, even if it is worth more than you are asking. Take some time to wipe down your items before offering them for sale and if you notice an item that is broken or too dirty, toss it.
- Don’t Price Like a Store
Another commonly made mistake when it comes to yard sales and moving sales is that you may be tempted to price the items as what they are worth. Anyone who heads to a local moving sale or yard sale is not looking to spend a lot of money. This means that you need to price your items within reason and remember that most of your customers are not looking to spend more than five bucks per item.
- Let People Know About the Sale
How will customers find your moving sale if you do not put up any ads or signs for your sale? Keep this in mind and consider advertising in the local paper or online. You should also use signs to point people in the direction of where your sale will be held.
- Choose a Prime Day to Sell
Would you stop by a sale on a Wednesday afternoon? Maybe if you were not working, but most people work Monday through Friday and do not have the time to stop and take a look at your moving sale during those times. You want to choose a day where a majority of people will be able to come out and shop. The two best days are usually Saturday and Sunday. Some people find that Friday is a good day too and others wait until after church hours on Sunday.
In addition to choosing a prime day to sell, make sure you choose a good location. For example, if your home is tucked away on a lonely road, it is unlikely people will find you easily. If this is the case, consider having your moving sale in a local church parking lot or at a friend’s house.
When it comes time to have a moving sale, make sure that you are not only prepared, but that you are pricing items to sell and always greet your customers.
