If you have decided to use a moving company to move your items, it is important that you do some research and choose the best company to fulfill your needs. If you fail to do research, you may end up working with a company that does not take your needs into consideration.
Below, you will find some things to think about and keep in mind while you are shopping for a moving company.
- Ask Around First
If you had a great experience working with someone, you would tell everyone right? So will your friends and family. When you are looking for a moving company, ask around. You will find that people will give you names of their favorite places.
When you do find a company, do your homework and research them. Avoid working with companies that are not located near you.
- Get an Estimate in Your Home
How can you receive a solid quote over the phone or online without the company even seeing the items you want moved? Of course, you can tell them some of the big things, but you can’t inventory your whole house and relay it over the phone.
Be wary of estimates that are provided without any type of look in your home.
- Look Over the Estimate Carefully
Some moving companies may have hidden fees or additional fees that you did not consider. Always look over your estimate with a fine tooth comb and ask whether the price will stay the same or fluctuate come moving day.
- Are They Licensed and Insured?
Any moving company you work with should be licensed and insured. There are laws that movers have to follow too and if you work with a fly-by-night company, you may find that some of your items are lost or damaged and you have no recourse.
Also, consider how long the company has been in business for. You may feel more comfortable working with more experienced movers who have been providing quality service for a decade or so.
- A Deposit? No Way!
If the moving company you are looking into requires you to pay a hefty deposit, kick them to the curb. Most moving companies will require little to no deposit. If you do pay a deposit, you may not see your items until it is convenient for the company.
On a side note, make sure to pay using a credit card when you can as you will have additional protection.
Choosing a moving company is hard work and requires you to put in some effort to evaluate the company. Never just go with the first company you see as it may be a scam.
