Are You Making These 4 Storage Mistakes?

SelectStorage November 5, 2015 Comments Off on Are You Making These 4 Storage Mistakes? 200

Placing your items in a storage unit is a great way to free up additional space in your home while still holding on to the items that you want. But, there are some large mistakes you may be making when you do store your items and these mistakes can end up costing you some additional money.

Below, we will go over the top four common storage mistakes that people tend to make when storing their items. If you find that you are committing these no-no’s, they are easy to fix.

Mistake #1: Wrapping Items in Newspaper

If you are wrapping the items you want to store in newspaper, you will find that you have dirty items when you unwrap them. Newspaper ink rubs off and can smear on your items, especially if you do not use a climate-controlled unit. Newspaper can also damage sensitive items by getting stuck to the paint and peeling it off when you unwrap the item.

You should use bubble wrap or plastic wrap to store your items. Once you use plastic or bubble wrap, you can then use newspaper around the wrap, but never place newspaper in direct contact with your items.

Mistake #2: No Insurance

It is not wise to store your items, especially valuables, without some type of insurance to cover them. Not all storage units require you to have insurance for your unit, but it is highly recommended. If something happens to your storage unit, the facility is not usually responsible for any losses that occur, so make sure you protect yourself and your items.

Mistake #3: Rushing to Store Your Items

If you are rushing around and you do not have any help to store your items, you will find that you are incorrectly placing boxes and you lose track of where everything is. Moving and storing items can become stressful quickly so make sure that you have adequate help before you store your items.

Mistake #4: No Organization or Labeling

BEFORE you store any boxes or containers in your unit, make sure that you are labeling them and placing them in a neat order. If you do not label your items, your storage unit will just be a big mess of boxes and to find something will mean opening each box until you find it.

If you are making any of the above four storage mistakes, they are easy to fix. The recommendations above will help you keep your unit organized and your valuables protected at all times.
