Indoor or Drive-Up Storage Unit: Pros and Cons

SelectStorage October 27, 2015 Comments Off on Indoor or Drive-Up Storage Unit: Pros and Cons 254

When you are looking to rent a storage unit, you will have two main options: indoor or drive-up. There are pros and cons to each type of unit and depending on what you plan to store, one of the units may be better suited for you than the other.

Below, we will go over some of the pros and cons of both units to help you decide which one will work best in your situation.

Indoor Storage: Pros and Cons

An indoor storage unit is inside of a storage building and you must enter into the building to access the unit. Indoor units are climate-controlled and they come in a variety of sizes from a small 5’ by 5’ to sometimes as large as 10’ by 20’.

Some of the pros associated with an indoor unit are:

  • No pests
  • Protection from extreme weather conditions
  • Less dust
  • You can access your unit indoors so you are out of the rain, snow, etc.

Some of the cons associated with an indoor unit are:

  • You cannot easily access them and must walk inside somewhere
  • Large and heavy objects are hard to move/fit
  • A lot of walking required from your car to unit and unit to car
  • Large items such as four-wheelers and vehicles cannot be stored in here

Drive-Up Storage: Pros and Cons

A drive-up storage unit is outside and you can drive your vehicle right up to the door. These units do not require you to enter in through a hallway and you can stay in your vehicle until you reach your unit. These units range in size from the smallest available at 5’ by 5’ to as large as 10’ by 30’.

Some of the pros associated with a drive-up unit are:

  • You can pull right up
  • Easy to move items into your storage unit
  • You can store large items such as vehicles, ATVs, and boats
  • Can get the largest unit size available

Some of the cons associated with a drive-up unit are:

  • No humidity or temperature control
  • Not protected from the rain or snow
  • Insects can enter the unit

As you can see, there are pros and cons to each type of unit. You will find that the right unit for you will hold all of your items and meet additional needs as well. For instance, if you do not need a climate-controlled unit, then a drive-up unit will likely work for you and vice versa.
